THE CLASSIFICATION OF PLANETS. The eight planets have been divided into two groups. All the planets of a particular group have some common features. The two groups are-Terrestrial/Rocky planets and Jovian/Gaseous planets. The four planets nearest to the Sun, Mercury-Venus-Earth-and-Mars, are called terrestrial planets. Their structure is similar to the Earth. Other four planets Jupiter-Saturn-Uranus-and-Neptune are called Jovian Planets. The classification the two groups [terrestrial and Jovian] is also named as inner and outer planets. They are separated by asteroid belt. Inner, Terrestrial, or Rocky planets. 1. They include- Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. 2. They are nearer to the Sun 3. They are made up of dense metallic minerals 4. They move fast in comparison to others and have shorter period of revolution. 5. They have thin and rocky crust 6. They have a mental rich in Iron and Magnesium. 7. They have a core of molten metals 8. They have a thin atmosphere. 9. They have very few of natural satellites or Moon or no satellites or Moon Outer, Jovian or Gaseous Planets. 1. They include- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune 2. They are far away from the Sun. 3. They are made up of hot gasses, mainly –Hydrogen and Helium. 4. They move slower and have longer period of revolution. 5. They are all gaseous bodies. 6. Made of gases 7. They have ring system around them 8. They have a large number of satellites or Moon.
