THE CROSS IN THE WINDOW- written by Michael D. Koehler At the time, I was the grounds keeper in a cemetery. I had no car to drive so I walked everywhere, including to work. As I walked to work every week day, there was this little old house I passed , nothing fancy, but had a crystal or glass cross you could see in the picture window. It was beautiful and unlike any cross Ive ever seen before, that I could see from the road. Everyday I passed, I wanted to go up to the window and get a closer look or even ask to go inside to look at it, as maybe there was a neat story behind this cross or something. But , I didnt want to look as a nosey person walking thru the neighborhood. So, I never did. One cloudy day, as I walked by this house in a hurry to get to work , I seen a little elderly lady sitting on the front porch , and as she waved to me, I just waved back still in a hurry. I figured now I seen who lives there, maybe I will catch her again on the porch on the way home to get a closer look at that beautiful cross. Well, on my way home , as I walked by the house, the little old lady was not on her porch , but I decided to go knock on her door. After knocking several times , I got no answer and thought well Maybe she is napping or stepped out so I walked over to the picture window to get a better look at that cross and it was gone. I thought to myself , this is strange. Maybe she moved it or something. Oh well, Ill try again tomorrow. The next day on my walk to work, as I passed the ladys house, the cross was still gone. A few days had passed, and again , the cross was still not in the window. Im wondering why in the world did she move it as it looked so beautiful glistening as the sun shined on it. Well, I was about to find out. Finishing up at work before lunchtime as I was arranging some fresh flowers on a new burial plot , I decided to go over to her house to see if I could catch her. As I walked up to her porch , there were a few cars in the drive. I rang the doorbell and another lady answered. I asked if the little old lady was here as Id like to see why she had moved the cross from the window. The lady answered, Im glad you are here. Im her daughter and my mother passed away last Tuesday. I was like what? Oh, and Im sorry to hear that, but why are you glad that Im here? She replied , well my mother wanted to give you that crystal cross that you admired everyday you walked by to work. She would always mention you as she watched you look at it when you walked by and said she wanted you to have it and left this note with it. Tears started to roll down my face as she handed me that most beautiful cross I had ever seen. I said thank you so much and Im sorry I never got to speak to your mother or ask if there was anything significant about the cross. Her daughter replied , well yes there is, just read the note. As I walked down the sidewalk , still teary eyed, I began to read the little note from the little old lady , it read- Dear Mr. Cross Admirer, I dont know how many times I wanted to give you this cross as I seen you admire it from the road , and tell you what it means to me and you, and now that its in your possession , you will know. Im thinking to myself, what could this cross possibly have to do with me? So, I read on. This cross, just made out of glass , may look beautiful , but the man who carried and died on this cross was more beautiful. A man named Jesus Christ who is Gods only son, died for your and my sins on a wooden cross, so we can be forgiven and live eternally with Him in heaven. This was the only special thing about this cross, not its looks, but the daily reminder that a man who loved me so much that he died for us. As I never got the chance to share this with you while I was living , I hope you will accept it and accept Him into your heart. See you in heaven, Signed - Doris. Oh how I was touched as I never knew she had seen me looking at the cross everyday and knowing I needed this as a reminder as well as Ive always heard about this man named Jesus in Sunday School. Weeks later at work, I seen a new headstone on the grave that I had arranged flowers on the day I was given the cross. The tombstone read- Doris Reed. 1910-1998. I knew this had to be the Doris that left me the cross. So, the next day I brought the cross to work and set it along side of her headstone and said - Thank You Doris, and yes, See you in heaven cause I am a believer because of you. Now everyday as I pass her old house I still think about the cross shining in the window , showing me the Light of God I would soon come to know. Doris was a light and I can be one too.
