THE DAILY IDEA: Harvard Business Review March 20, 2014 Daily Rituals Can Inspire Creativity While it may seem counter-intuitive that following the same routine day in and day out could make you more creative, it can actually free your brain to come up with new ideas. It worked for the likes of Charles Dickens and Beethoven, who took daily walks that proved inspirational. It worked for Hemingway and Arthur Miller, who kept strict work hours and walked away when their time was up, even if they were on a roll. Some creatives had spouses and friends who enabled their daily routines: Sigmund Freud’s wife, Martha, laid out his clothes each day and Jane Austen’s sister, Cassandra, took over most of the domestic duties so that Jane had time to write. As Mason Curry, author of Daily Rituals: How Artists Work puts it, “A solid routine fosters a well-worn groove for one’s mental energies and helps stave off the tyranny of moods.” SOURCE: The Daily Routines of Geniuses by Sarah Green
