THE DEDICATED WEST COAST FLOWERLINE is now open on 071 320 7146 for the remainder of the flower season (from 8:00 – 20:00 Monday to Sunday) Flower Viewing Tips and Popular Routes The people of the Cape West Coast and Namaqualand are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable as to the whereabouts of the best flowers so do ask them - and follow these simple tips: •Flowers are best viewed from 11:00 to 15:00 on a sunny day. Certain flowers do not open if overcast and most flowers will only open at temperatures of 17°C or higher. •Do not plan your trip according to the distance in kilometres. Always ask a local person how long it will take for you to reach a certain place, then add a couple of hours viewing time; in other words, allow for extra travelling time. Stop frequently. •To ensure your tank never runs dry, refuel at every opportunity. Carry a good map and if possible, ask for the best and most scenic routes to your destination. •The towns in the Cape west coast and Namaqualand are few and far between. Cell phone reception is generally available along the major routes in the Western Cape, but in the Northern Cape that may be only in the towns themselves or nearby. •It is always a good idea to pack an “on-the-go lunch” and use only braai (barbeque) facilities provided. •Pack in insect repellent. •Always have extra drinking water and refreshments in the vehicle. •Stand with your back to the sun, or drive with the sun behind you - the flowers always face the sun. •Always mindful of passing traffic, get out of the vehicle and take leisurely walks in the veld. Most of the flowers are so tiny that you won’t be able to see and appreciate them from a moving vehicle. •Do not trample plants unnecessarily and picking of flowers/bulbs/plants is prohibited. • Do not disturb nature in any way, especially dune areas. •To find out where the best flowers are call the West Coast Flowerline on 071 320 7146.
