THE DEITY OF CHRIST Part 2 Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God. John 1:18 expresses His deity in every explicit way: No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only who is at the Fathers side, has made him known. His being at the Fathers side, expresses, not a distinction in essence or an inferiority in anyway, but a close relationship to the Father and a sharing in the Fathers authority. The Church has used the term incarnation to refer to the fact that Jesus was God in human flesh. (Colossians 1:19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness to dwell in Him; 2:9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form. Matthew 1:23 The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and they will call Him Emmanuel - which means God with us.) The incarnation was the act of God he Son whereby he took to Himself a human nature. Incarnation can be summarized as; Remaining what he was, he became what he has not, Jesus continued remaining what he was (fully divine) he also became what he previously had not been (Fully human. He did not give up any of His deity when he became man, but he did take on humanity that was not his before. The Scriptural proof for the Deity of Christ is extensive in the New testament. Scriptural Claims 1. The word God (theos) used of Christ. The word theos God is usually reserved in the New testament for God the Father is also used in several passages to refer to Jesus Christ. In John 1:1-4; John 1:1; John 1:18; John 20:25,27,28; Hebrews 1:3; Hebrews 1:8; Hebrews 1:10; Psalm 102:25; Collosians 2:9; Psalm 45:6; 2 Peter 1:1; Romans 9:5; Titus 2:13; Isaiah 9:6. 2. The word Lord (Kurios) used of Christ in what can only be understood as this strong Old Testament sense, the Lord who is YAHWEH or God himself. Luke 22:11; Matthew 3:3; Isaiah 40:3; Psalm 110:1; mATTHEW 22:44; 1 Corinthians 8:6 3. Jesus Own Claims To His Deity. Jesus claims for himself the title I AM by which God designates Himself as the eternal existing One, the God who is the source of his own existence and who is always been and always will be. Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was I AM. (John 8:58) 4. Evidence that Jesus Possessed attributes of Deity. Jesus have demonstrated the following attributes of a deity: Omnipotence (Matthew 8:26-27), Immortality (John 2:19) And worthy to be worship. (Revelation 19:10). THE NECESSITY OF JESUS DEITY 1. Only someone who is infinite God, could bear the full penalty for all the sins of all those who would believe in Him- any finite would have been incapable of bearing that penalty. 2. Salvation is from the Lord (Jonah 2:9) And the whole message of Scripture is design to show that no human being, nor creature, could ever save man - only God Himself. 3. Only someone who was truly and fully God could be the one mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and man Christ Jesus. If Jesus is not fully God, we have no salvation and ultimately no Christianity. Implications Of the Doctrine Of Christs Deity 1. We can have real knowledge of God. Jesus said, Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father (John 14:9) 2. Redemption is available to us. The death of Christ is sufficient to all sinners whoever lived , for it was not merely human but an infinite God who died. 3. God and humanity and Been reunited. It was not an angel or human who came from God to human race. but God himself crossed the chasm created by sin. 4. Worship of Christ is appropriate. He is not merely the highest of the creatures, but he is God in the same sense and to the same degree as the Father. MCG
