THE DEMOCRACY OF EBOLA Yesterday I was privy to hear through a US based physician how a colleague of his was contacted by a Nigerian Big man who confided in him that he thinks he and his son have being exposed to the Ebola virus and if his friend the US doctor could help him get into the treatment program the present US patients (the two doctors) are currently in. His friend the US doctor told him that he should report himself to the. Nigerian authorities immediately as that was his country and that if he tried to show up in the US he would have no choice but to provide the information he just shared with him to the US authorities in the interest of public good. Now I am comparing the reaction of the US to this threat to our reaction in Nigeria, when we started to speak about the threat of Ebola in West Africa our Minister of health treated it the way our govt officials always treat issues: DENIAL. Our minister said it was impossible for Ebola to get to Nigeria, his information counterpart Maku even said we had vaccines and treatment (I guess he was talking about bitter kola). Now the infection has landed here in what is clearly our authorities negligence, many more have died, a quarantined patient was able to escape and has possibly infected another 20. Hmmm, the only response I have seen is for our govt to announce an almost 2 billion fund to fight EBOLA, I wonder whether we would just throw money at the virus in the absence of any concrete plans and hope it would go away. Even to coordinate receiving help from organizations willing to help seems to be a challenge, a few days ago I was looking for contacts to coordinate a donation of large quantities of protective gear. Our officials seem to think this is another opportunity to make some money, but believe me we are toying with fire. Ebola might be what would teach us some sense if we are not careful, if we continue to manage this the way we are, I will predict this pandemic may wipe off half of our population, the truth is that it only takes a cook or steward in the governors mansion to spread the virus to the governor, it would only take the child of the minister or the president picking it up in school and church for the whole of Aso Rock to pick it up. Ebola is going to be the first NATIONAL DISASTER we will have that would not discriminate between the poor man and the big man, before now the big man would just get on his jet or even call an air ambulance and they would fly him wherever he wants in the world to remove a corn on his big toe. But lets see which country would take any of our big men with Ebola virus. This brings me to the conclusion that perhaps, the Ebola virus would be the most democratic dispenser of justice we would ever see in this country. It would not spare anyone on the basis of tribe, religion, economic status or political affiliation, except we all join hands to GENUINELY and SINCERELY tackle this problems, it looks as if we are all doomed to me. God help us all.
