THE DESCRIPTION OF GOD. [1] God is Spirit John. 4:24. [2] God is light 1 John 1:5. [3] God is Love 1.John. 4:17. [4] God is a consuming fire Heb. 12:29. [1] GOD IS SPIRIT John. 4:24. God is a Spirit being. He is immaterial and incorporeal. A spirit does not have flesh and bones (Lk. 24:39). This is why God is spoken of as being invisible. Deut. 4:15 – 19; Exo. 33:20; John. 1:18, Rom. 1:20; 1 Tim. 1:17; 6:16; Col. 1:15. since God is invisible, he forbaded Israel to make any visible images or similarities of himself (Deut. 4:14 – 20; Isa. 40:25). God is also a personal being when we speak of God as being Spirit, this does not means that God is some impersonal force or entity. He is person with self – consciousness, self – determination will, intelligence and feeling John 4:20 – 24; Gen. 1:2; 2 Cor. 3:17; 1 Cor. 2:11). In his personhood, he is essentially a spiritual being rather than a physical being. [2] GOD IS LIGHT (1 John. 1:5) This refers to majesty or the Glory of God. God is light and he dwells in unapproachable light who no man hath seen, or can see. 1Tim. 6:15 – 16. God does not just have light, he is light. Light is absolutely pure, impossible to defile, God is eternal immoral and invisible (1 Tim. 1:17). [3] GOD IS LOVE (1 John 4:17) Love refers to the very heart of God’s nature. God does not just have love, he is Love (John. 3:16) love involves the grace, mercy, kindness, goodness and desire of God toward all his creatures. [4] GOD IS A CONSUMING FIRE(Heb. 12:29). This refers to the holiness of God’s nature. Fire is not God, but God is a consuming fire. This relates to the definition that God is light. The most frequent symbol used of God in the Bible is that of fire. It is always significant of his holiness and absolute righteousness in judgement against sin. Some examples of fire relating to God.
