THE DOOR by Teri Borseti Chapter 10 The nest day Shelly got up as usual. She went through her mail and picked-up the house. Then she headed for her computer and started logging more about her adventures courtesy of The Door. But she still had so many questions. “Why can’t I pick the places I want to go? Will the trips alternate between bad and good? What’s the longest I can stay? And I think I’d almost prefer to be seen and to be able to participate in conversations than remain invisible. Saliba just left me hanging and the one short note that came with the painting was very limited. She tried to remember everything he said to her the day they met at Larue. “I was one of the chosen ones. He is a servant of The Door. I can’t own the painting. Council of Time Manipulators?” None of it made sense. She went into her bedroom and decided to change the sheets. If she stayed busy and distracted maybe she would be able to stop thinking about The Door. After that she watered and pruned her house plants but in time her curiosity, once again got the best of her. The next thing she knew she was sitting in front of the door. This time she was anxious and hoped she’d be transported to someplace delightful like Newport instead of being witness to a famous murder in cold Russia. She comforted herself with the idea that no matter what, those magic words would always bring her right back to the safety of her home in an instant. The light began and then a flash. Shelly was getting used to the drill. She found herself in an arena with an enormous crowd of screaming people. Most were women but these weren’t screams of terror. It was so loud that it made her feel like she was going to lose her balance. The outdoor theatre was dark but there was a stage down in the center that was flooded with lights, and though she was pretty far away from it she could see that there was some kind of performance going on but the screaming made it impossible to hear anything. Some of the women fainted and others burst into tears. She looked at the crowd and studied their clothing and hairstyles. Go-go boots and shags. She guessed she landed in the early 60’s. She decided to get closer to the stage and maybe find out who the performer or performers were. Shelly knew it probably wasn’t Elvis down on that stage as she made her way closer. Within a few seconds she thought she heard part of a song. Yes, she did. “She Loves You Yeah Yeah Yeah.” That’s when she realized it was the Beatles on stage!! She was actually at a Beatles concert. What a lucky break. It was an adventure beyond her wildest dreams. She wanted to scream louder than everyone. This was the best possible place she could have gone! Shelly knew that if she didn’t get as close to the stage as possible that she’d just die but down along the front fans were squished together behind a protective barrier that was lined with security guards. The stage was a few feet away so Shelly decided to walk right into the buffer zone and she stood there with the security guards and roadies who had no idea of her presence. Maybe this invisible thing wasn’t such a bad idea after all. There she was right in front of the stage actually watching the Beatles perform. This was a dream beyond dreams. They all wore matching black suites with ties. They wore what would forever be called “Beatle Boots” with little heels. They sang and shook their mop tops just the way history remembered. Their “long” hair wasn’t really long at all compared to the men’s hairstyles that would follow right through to the 70’s. She was just a little too young to go to rock concerts when the Beatles toured in the 60’s and always regretted never getting to see them. She had listened to their albums and tapes until they were just about worn out. There was John Lennon ripping his own throat out singing “Twist and Shout”. Paul McCartney smiled when they met at the mike to harmonize. Ringo beat the drums with his hair in his eyes and almost looked shy, and though George was quite a presence she sensed that he was a little overwhelmed by the crowd. On the other side of the fence girls were crying, screaming and fainting, and because she’d been a fan for so long Shelly felt she might do the same. The Beatles were young and this must have been part of their first American tour. She as absolutely beside herself as they sang “All My Loving”, “Little Child”, “I’m Really Down”, and “I Want to Hold Your Hand”. There was The Fab Four performing right in front of her and she sang along to every song. It was paramount. Shelly stayed for the entire show. She was filled with so many different emotions and was so ecstatic about this trip that it made up for the gruesome murder she witnessed the night before – well almost. When the concert came to an end the Beatles left the stage, and with the help of several muscle bound security men, they headed towards a waiting limo. The screaming continued. For a moment Shelly wanted to run to where they were and jump inside the car with them but there were already policemen everywhere and girls throwing themselves on the hood of the limo. It was complete chaos and she knew she’d only end up getting hurt. The Beatles actually made it into the waiting vehicle just in time as the crowd would probably have torn them apart just trying to grab even the tiniest piece of fabric from their clothing. Shelly knew she would have done the same. She and the others watched until the lights on the limo could no longer be seen. The crowd didn’t seem ready to go and fans just lingered outside the arena for quite a while. It was a kind of energy that couldn’t be quelled. Even though Shelly knew the night was over and that she might as well go back home something in the nostalgia made her want to stay just a little bit longer. When she said the magic words and returned to her house she just sat there almost in a trance for quite awhile. It was one of the very best nights of her life, real or not. After staying up late listening to Beatles music Shelly went to bed.
