THE DRAFT Why was the name Evelyn Miller so scary for so many of us in Corpus Christi who were of draft-able age during the Vietnam War era. A couple of headlines from 1967 might explain. By the end of 1967, over 13,000 Americans had been killed and many thousands wounded....and the worst years were still ahead. There was rarely a day in the late 60s when the days headline did not involve the war. Draft quotas were set and rose every month as the casualty list rose. Getting that letter from Mrs. Miller could be a young mans worst nightmare. All of that seems like a lifetime ago. Yet, in a way, it feels like yesterday. Although Ive visited the Vietnam Memorial in D.C. more than 25 times, it remains the most moving memorial Ive ever seen. The names of more than 58,000 brave souls etched on that wall remind us of the enormous sacrifice so many have made and continue to make. Never tire of thanking a veteran.
