THE FAULTS BEYOND RECTIFICATION: CASTEISM, REGIONISM, RELIGIONISM, AND LINGUISM. Now that were done with elections, we have all the time and opportunity to look at the results and analyse why electorate supported the triumphant candidate. It is not surprising to find out that people of our area are still bounded by the margins of caste, region, religion, and language as they have been for decades. Following your religion; being proud of your caste and the language you speak, and the region which you belong to— are understandable aspects and very much acceptable. But preferring aforementioned facts over merit in politics of a multi-religious, multilingual, culturally and regionally diverse country like India is an altogether different issue and reveals nothing but illiteracy of electorate. People have overlooked educational qualification, communication skills, political experience and abilities of others and voted for the candidate of their caste. Although, BJP has tried to blur its saffron image and brought Hindus and Muslims on one platform by giving tickets to Muslim candidates, it largely failed to achieve the objective. Abdhul Gani Kohli is the only Muslim candidate in the history of Jammu and Kashmir who stood victorious on the ticket of BJP, thus bringing Hindus and Muslims on one plateau. Chowdhary Talib Hussain failed to do the same in Rajouri. Even if he had succeeded, it would have involved a speck of casteism in it– The Gujjar vote bank. Means, termination of religionism by harvesting casteism. Maliks will vote for Malik; Rajputs will vote for Rajput; Chowdharys will vote for Chowdhary; Brahmins will vote for Brahmin, and this system will remain as it is. These social barriers are also the hindrance in our democratic and secular setup. And these have prevailed, are prevailing, and will prevail– forever!
