THE FEMININE TOUCH Life, generally, would have been a graveyard - TopicsExpress

THE FEMININE TOUCH Life, generally, would have been a graveyard without the inevitability of a woman and the efficacy of good music. If these two factors could turn the world around, what happens when music is found in the hands of a woman? Imagine the harmonious blending that takes place inside a womans cooking-pot; the mind-arresting aroma she evokes when she stews, or boils or fries. From the kitchen to all walks of life, the feminine touch of a woman has had a hold on the Nigerian music industry. Talking about the Nigerian music scene of today without such names as Asa, Omawumi, Waje, Tiwa Savage, Chidinma, Sasha, Eva, Yemi Alade, Muna, Seyi Shay, Tipsy, Niyola, Splash, Nneka, Lami, and a host of others would be a sacrilege. From background voices, to collabos, there is hardly any music done in Nigeria today without that feminine touch I am talking about. However, it is heartbreaking that our female singers are no longer making the kind of impact women-singers made while we were growing up in the 80s and 90s. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, Nigerians were mesmerized by the vocal power, sound lyrics and the rhythmic energy and competitiveness of such artistes as Onyeka Onwenu, Christie Igbokwe, Queen Salawa Abeni amongst a few others. Those were women who did not just sing for the money or popularity; they addressed some of the topical issues of their society with their music. Thus, they were representative singers in every sense of it. Simply put, they echoed the voices of numerous Nigerian women. What went wrong? When did the rain start to beat the female singers in Nigeria? I guess necessity suddenly became the mother of their invention. Most of the female singers started losing it before they were even made. What more do we expect; most of them were products of one reality show, talent hunt or the other. Their rise to fame was too sudden and unexpected sometimes that they couldnt handle the afterwards. As much as we appreciate the efforts and impact of these shows, it would be a thing of joy if the discovered are made to embrace, address and redress the realities embedded in the society that produces them. That way, they would learn to fit-into and not freeze out of their society. Notwithstanding, we are not saying that there are not some of them who the younger ones can look up to as role-models; we are simply trying to ask if they are doing enough to revive the rich cultural heritage the older generation of female singers were known for. A female singer in our views should bring sanity into an industry that might be going insane - an industry that is seemingly dominated by the male artistes. Therefore, our mission here at LADY OF SONGS is to discover and nurture a female talent that would be groomed to synthesize beauty and brain; reason and emotions, in such a way that the world would bow at her musical genius, respect her personality and give credit to the society and gender she represents. Essentially, a lady that would not be ashamed of her cultural heritage while embracing the western ways. That would be our lady of songs - a lady with the feminine touch! Lady of Songs
