THE FESTIVAL PROVIDES THE INITIATIVE FOR THE TWINNING OF TWO CITIES: LATINA AND TOURRETTE-LEVENS, IN FRANCE. MEANWHILE, HENRY THE CLOWN PROVIDES ENDLESS FUN AND LAUGHTER TO RECEPTIVE AUDIENCES. At noon on Saturday morning, the Mayor of Latina, Giovanni di Giorgi, received thirty Circus and live entertainment dignitaries from all over the world in the conference room in the Town Hall of the city. Amongst those present were: the General Director of the Russian State Circus ‘Rosgoscirk’, Gagloev Vadim Chermenovich; Cirque du Soleil’s head of casting, Philippe Agogué; the President of the State Circus of Bulgaria, Alexandar Balkansky; the Stage Director of the ‘Moulin Rouge’ in Paris, Thierry Outrilla; Director of the World Circus Federation, Brian Boswell; a delegation representing the Republic of Turkmenistan. The Mayor gave a welcome speech to those present, in which he encouraged them to continue to promote the traditions of the Circus. There were touching moments when Mayor Di Giorgi warmly mentioned the late Giulio Montico, founder of the ‘International Circus Festival – City of Latina’. The meeting ended with a written pledge of friendship and twinning between the cities of Latina and Tourrette-Levens, signed by Mayor Giovanni di Giorgi, of Latina, and Dr. Alain Frère, Mayor of Tourrette-Levens: two towns linked by their strong Circus associations. Meanwhile, in the Big Top, shows continued on Saturday under the scrutiny of the International Technical Jury, while this year’s Guest Star, clown Henry the Prince, gets up to all sorts of tricks, often involving unknowing members of the public. He cooks spaghetti, which somehow ends up being copiously ‘distributed’ to the audience. He also catches a giant wasp with a hefty dose of ‘insecticide’, and directs an imaginary orchestra. Unsuspecting members of the public so far included in his gags have included the President of ‘Caffé Circi Sabaudia’ (a national volleyball ‘B’ team), and player Martina Vaccarella. At midday on Sunday there was a Holy Catholic Mass in the ring of the Big Top, co-celebrated by Father Bernard E.M. van Welzenes, General Secretary of the Forum of Christian Organizations for the Pastoral Care of Circus and Carnival Workers. This year the Mass was celebrated in four languages: Italian, English, German and French, and the Corale della Diocesi di Latina was also present to sing during the Mass. Also on Sunday, the competing acts in both shows were watched by the CRITICS JURY, consisting of artistes from differing sectors of the world of the arts, and journalists from the general and the dedicated circus press. The CRITICS JURY was headed by actress and all-round performer Brigitta Boccoli, acting as President of the Jury, painter and sculptress Elena Zaïka, who designed and painted this years Festival poster, and actor and painter Antonio La Rosa. They were joined by members of the circus and general press press to find a winner of the Critics Prize.
