THE GIVER -- Id like to recommend this new sci-fi movie, THE GIVER, starring Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep. It doesnt have those huge sfx that seem to be so prevalent in most sci-fi movies nowadays, but it has a compelling story. It takes place in the future, after a big war, where a futuristic community has created a society of conformity -- devoid of emotions, differences, history, and even colors, in order to eliminate differences that invariably lead to conflict and war. One person, though, is selected to remember the memories of the past, both good and bad. When that person becomes old, they become The Giver, and pass along that knowledge to the new young person, The Receiver. In this story, the new Receiver, with his new-found knowledge, tries to change his feelingless society. On a sidenote, while the stories were different, I thought there was a tiny bit of similarity with The Hunger Games in that a lone rebel tries to take on their totalitarian regime to try to bring about change. As previously mentioned, this is not a movie about robots, space ships, and special effects. But it is a movie about the human spirit, and it is quite moving. And Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep give great performances. So as to not spoil the movie, I recommend you just go see it, and not read too much about it beforehand.
