THE GOD WHO SAVES “I am the Lord your God, the holy God of Israel, who saves you”. Isa 43:3 GNB Some people wonder “What is God for?” Some suggest that He is there to keep the whole universe going now that He has created it. Others accept that part at least of His job is to give humans the laws they must keep if they are to avoid chaos. Others see Him as a stern policeman to punish people for doing wrong. Some think He is a “blessing machine”, sitting up there dolloping out blessings when people are good and withholding them when they aren’t. Others again think He’s there to wipe our tears, cheer us up and make life nice and easy. Down through the ages again and again He has acted decisively and powerfully to save His people. They need saving from danger. They need saving from disasters. But most of all they need saving from sin. The truth is that people get themselves into a mess because of a diabolical bias they have to sin. They reject God and defiantly disobey His laws. He loves them and they fail to love in return. They alienate themselves from Him by constantly sinning. So He steps in to rescue them, to redeem them and to call them to live in harmony with Him. His main business is salvation. When He rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt it set the pattern for all His future activity. Because of this He sent Jesus Christ to save His own people and all humanity. Jesus achieved this by dying on the cross and rising again. Do you know salvation, God’s gift of free salvation in Christ? If not, believe in Him now and accept this priceless gift. PRAYER THOUGHT Lord, I believe. Gift me Your great gift of salvation.
