THE GOLDEN RULE intuitively makes sense for humans: model the behavior you expect from others. It makes sense because it seems fair. It raises questions, though. Is God only as forgiving as we are? Does this mean if we do not love, we are doomed? Most of us do not love perfectly at all times, but neither do we completely fail at love. What will the gatekeeper do with those of us who are neither sheep nor goat? [Matt. 25:31-46] What if we love some of the time? We need to reconcile our imperfection with Jesus’ warning “for with the judgment you pronounce, you will be judged” (Matt. 7:2). Jesus knows we are not perfect, and he knows what it is like to be human. He gave us the model of his life to help us follow him in love. But we lack his singular devotion to love; we lack his sense of perfect detachment form all the things of this world. Because of these deficiencies, we falter. - Christopher Maricle The Jesus Priorities
