THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL (2014) I rarely do this, but I bought this movie, sight unseen, because of how much Ive enjoyed the last few Wes Anderson movies. Unlike other directors I love, though, from the Coen Brothers to Christopher Nolan to James Cameron, I wouldnt consider myself a diehard fan, Im a relative newcomer who only realized the genius of Anderson after Fantastic Mr. Fox. I submit that no one has ever seen a Wes Anderson film and said, Huh, I wonder who directed that? It is always quirky, weird, affected and art-y, with an expansive cast of talented actors, often in very tiny bit parts. It always has distinctive music and exquisite production design, and is designed to take the viewer and put them in a place, let them interact with the characters, and then pack them away back to real life again. Grand Budapest could be seen as parody for those tired of Andersons schtick, but Im definitely not one of those. Amazing lead performances by veteran actor Ralph Fiennes and newcomer Tony Revolori, a bit of sadness and murder and melancholy in with the delightful quirk, a heist movie, a road movie and a character piece... I *loved it. 5/5
