THE HANDICAP IS NOT IN YOUR MIND. IT’S IN THE DAMN PHONE. By smart mobile devices (SMD) I mean the proliferating rash of smartphones, phablets and tablets running Android and Windows Phone, and also those from Apple’s walled garden. SMD App versions for facebook, gmail, word-processing, spreadsheeting and messaging are restricted “lite” versions, meant for dimunitive screens and lack of QWERTY keyboards. On the one hand, the desktop/laptop environment facilitiates authoring of substantial amounts of text, image and video material. This text can be serious, publish-worthy, grammatically-correct, well laid-out material. The desktop/laptop environment also facilitiates rich mind-hand integration. On the other hand, SMDs treacherously cripple user productivity. They compromise your high-school skills to compose a well structured essay. “Lite” SMD apps, severely impair your ability to document multiple ideas, simultaneously and parallelly in multiple text and multimedia edited documents. Where is literate mankind headed?
