THE HAUNTED SOLDIER. In this dark corner I see the walls, they shimmer, I see through the fabric, through the mist that gathers. I see my mind before me, as though in a maze, Shapes, sounds and smells, appear through the haze. As I watch, life slowly drifts, through shattered soul, Each site passing slowly, though none seem whole. A child leaving home, the teacher sees tears, sad little face, At the coach, his tearful mother hands over his case. No more will he know his family at home, heart turns to stone, In silence he sat the long journey, feeling so alone. They no longer wanted him, so they sent him away, At ten he turned cold , knew alone he must stay. Six years he grew hard, grew tough in that school, Learned to fight, to survive, be nobodies fool. When he left full of anger, trusted none , never cried, No one got close, long ago the inner child died. Trouble second nature, he never backed down, A teen always drifting with permanent frown, A year on remand, two more served in jail, Came out hard and bitter, blue eyes turning pale. On streets he would wander, odd jobs here and there, Some friends, though more enemies, he didnt care. Rode with the bikers, fought Mods on the coast, His colours on his back, his only boast. One day he awoke, knew there must be more, Enlisted for kicks, soon learned the score. In the Army he fitted, a place he belonged, A family of sorts, a strong binding bond. He served and grew, both in body and mind His place he had found, a home of a kind. Two years passed easy, a girl in his heart, Love finally reached him, no longer apart. Thoughts of a family, two dream of shared life, He knew he would soon make this lady his wife. But Fate never rests, never sleeps, often lies, Through the smoke and blast his lady love died. Once more the horsemen, the Apocalypse four, Ride through the world bringing death and war. Man never learns from mistakes of the past, Never learns how to live, peace never lasts. They stood by their duty, once more march to fight, Defending their country, for freedom and right. He knew he must stand, with comrades and friends, He knew he would fight, must kill and defend. He saw Mans faults, felt the horror and fear, Saw his friends fall in pain, saw them die through his tears. But never did they falter, never would they run, He stood tall with them all, faced death with a gun. One day he came home, he returned and he tried, But his dreams they had withered, inside they had died. Hes left with his nightmares, full of guilt and alone, Hides within flashbacks and feels must atone. Cries through his nights, sees dead through his tears, Awaits death to release him, from this life of his fears. In this dark corner, through walls as they shimmer, I see through the fabric, through the mists that gather, My life is before me , as though in a maze, Memories flow out, appear through the haze. As I watch, my life drifts through my shattered soul, Each part passing slowly, though none appear whole.. by Phil. M. Lamb©
