THE HEALING POWERS OF TEARS Whenever I observe people trying to relieve themselves from an apparent agony by crying it out, I recollect a girlfriend to a very close friend of mine who always insisted I should allow her cry in order to relieve the agony caused the their usual quarrel. And true to her assertion, she often get relieved after shedding those tears. Most people dont seem to know that crying, or psychogenic lachrymations as it is medically termed, helps to relieve stress and anxiety. Many people claim they feel better after a good cry. Psychologically, crying is a function of the parasymphatetic nervous system, which is responsible for relaxation. According to Professor Roger Baker, a consultant clinical psychologist crying is the transformation of distress into something tangible, and that the process itself helps to reduce the feeling of trauma. Whether it is meant to mourn a loved one or because of sheer frustration at work, at home or in a relationship, once the tears flow and you wipe them off, the world can seem like its put back together again. Research has suggested that tears could actually be a way of flushing negative chemicals out of the system and doing you a world of good. William Frey, a biochemist at the University of Minnesota, hypothesised in his book Crying, The Mystery of Tears that people feel better after crying due to the elimination of hormones associated with stress. Tears were proven to possess biological benefits, it does provide a cleansing that allows the body to discharge toxins. Crying bathes and cleanses the inner sanctuary of your body. It can also refresh your heart. So when you are traumatised, broken hearted, bereaved, wounded or lost, let the tears flow. Dont hold back the tears. Holding back may be necessary in a single moment, but at some point allow your body to release the stress of the moment and have a good cry. It might end up being what will refreshen and reinvigorate you.
