THE HIPNESS FACTOR REDUX #1299 MEETS TBT... Maestro Ray Santos - TopicsExpress

THE HIPNESS FACTOR REDUX #1299 MEETS TBT... Maestro Ray Santos influence on big band Afro-Cuban based jazz and dance music is ubiquitous. Here, a group of students at the Roberto Ocasio Latin Jazz Camp in Cleveland, Ohio conducted by artistic director/artist in residence, yours truly, Bobby Sanabria interprets one of his most well known compositions/arrangements, Sunny Ray Mambo, which he originally recorded with the Machito Orchestra in the early 1960s. The students range in age from 8th to 12th grade in high school and come from all across the country to study for an intense four day session culminating in a big band concert finale, in this case at Cleveland State University. The tune, according to Maestro Ray, was inspired by a neighbor named Sunny who played timbales and would whistle a fragment of the opening melody when he would see Ray which would bug him. Its a textbook example of clave counterpoint, weaving from one side of the clave to another and back seamlessly. Yet another reason to study the wisdom of the elders. I had the privilege to record a slightly different version under Maestro Santos baton for the Mambo Kings soundtrack. https://youtube/watch?v=FtBImIBKhEs
