THE HISTORY OF THE VMAS As we all know the MTV Video Music - TopicsExpress

THE HISTORY OF THE VMAS As we all know the MTV Video Music Awards are fast approaching! So we decided now was a good time to look back at the craziest most outrageous iconic events that have happened at the VMAs so far! As you know, if you put that many celebrity divas in a room things are bound to get interesting! I think its safe to say over the years that Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Madonna have stolen the show multiple times in the VMA history. From Madonna and Britney’s iconic kiss to Britney and Lady Gaga’s (or should I say alter ego Jo Calderone) near kiss, to meat dresses and live snakes on stage, these three have been the most talked about pop female artists in the history of the VMAs. Its safe to say I think that Lady Gaga defiantly wins the award for consistency with her shock factor. From her 2009 Paparazzi performance where she, or her outfit, started to bleed onstage during a performance to wearing a meat dress to collect an award and asking Cher to hold her meat purse, to coming to the VMAs dressed as alter ego Jo Caldreone and sticking to the role so much that at one point she was even spotted in the mens toilets. Despite Lady Gaga not necessarily being everyone’s cup or tea its safe to say she has consistently stolen the show and is a true MTV VMA icon! https://youtube/watch?v=QlGcICNbdtw Now lets think back to a time of where the VMAs was all about the music and the quality of the acts…..rather than what boy band member Taylor Swift was accompanied by this time. In 1995 Michael Jackson stole the show with his performance of a medley of his greatest hits so far! He performed a 15 min long set that features songs such as ‘Beat it’ , ‘Black or white’ and ‘Billie Jean’ and received an amazing reaction from the crowd. This was a huge moment for the MTV VMAs that should never be forgotten about. https://youtube/watch?v=FSb9SBiehL8 Michael Jackson hasn’t been the only person to perform a medley however, last year in 2013 Justin Timberlake performed a medley his own greatest hits. Not only this but he also brought back Nsync for a special performance just for the VMAs. It was nice to see the boys back together and they were greated by priceless reactions from other celebs in the audience including a sea shell bra and ‘garden panty’ wearing Lady Gaga jumping up in the air fangirling, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and almost close to tears and doing their typical ‘white girl’ dance moves. I personally was just surprised they could all dance in sync together. https://youtube/watch?v=5aVkddCtp0U A stunt that’s proving popular over the course of the VMA performances is to start the performance form outside the building at a different location. This was first done by Eminem in 2000 when he performed The Real Slim Shady and The Way I Am. He started the performance outside the building and was followed inside by an army of Slim Shadys. Taylor Swift later did this technique in 2009 for her performance of You Belong with me. https://youtube/watch?v=fuHYulWR14Q https://youtube/watch?v=oxmbSWrO0Fo#t=78 Some of the VMAs events of the past few years have really grabbed the headlines for maybe the wrong reasons. One of the most famous ones of these was in 2009 when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swifts award acceptance speech to say that Beyoncé deserved the award rather than Taylor Swift. THE SHADE! Nothing else quite like this has happened in award show history however there was a huge flood of bad press recently for Miley Cyrus and Robin Thickes performance last year! The 21 year old ex Disney star Miley Cyrus was seen on stage white girl twerking against giant teddy bears and against 37 year old Robin Thicke. https://youtube/watch?v=N7km0MRajhs The VMAs have not only grabbed the headlines for the wrong reasons however. In 2011 Beyonce announced that she was pregnant after an amazing performance of her single Love on Top. Beyonce really showed the world that the VMAs should be about love and joy and celebration together. The performance consisted of her wearing a sequin suit dancing and singing without all the gimmicks and making it just about the music……well that is until she made it about her pregnancy. https://youtube/watch?v=GI1OJyKBtYw Another act that grabbed the publics attention for the right reasons last year was Macklemore, Mary Lambert and Ryan Lewis performing Same Love. This song is drawing attention to the importance of gay rights and the stripped simple back performance got amazing feedback online from not only the public, but also other celebrities showing appreciation to Macklemores message. It was so nice to see a rap artist singing about rights for people rather than making homophobic or racist lyrics and I think this is why people gave such amazing feedback as it is something so alien to this industry. https://youtube/watch?v=N1Kfs3dgXhM Will be interesting to see what will happen this year!!
