THE HYPOCRISY OF AKWA IBOM YOUTHS Here in AKWA IBOM YOUTHS FORUM, we use to think that corruption is the number one problem in our state (it certainly is) but yesterday we assessed the views of our fans on our posts and comments over the years and came to the realization that actually it might not be corruption but ETHNICITY. We realized that whenever we post any statement that holds the Akpabio government to account, we get a lot of praise and endorsement from our Ibibio members but a lot of condemnation and abuse from our Annang members. On the 5th of October 2014, we decided to revisit the past and reassess the legacy of former Gov. Attah, and we got a lot of condemnation and abuse from our Ibibio members while we got praise and endorsement from our Annang members. This observation goes a long way to underscore the point that ethnicity is probably the biggest problem we have in Akwa Ibom State. People are prepared to ignore the truth and support what is wrong just because their “brother” or kinsman did it but if you criticize another person who is not their “brother” or kinsman with the same facts they come out praising and endorsing you. Akwa Ibom youths, this is hypocrisy and the spirit of ethnicity in manifestation, it might be an indication that we are not ready for change, it shows that we are not even sincere with ourselves. The truth should be the truth irrespective of who is involved even if they are our father or mother, brother or sister. History has taught us that when the Europeans came to Africa they saw us first as one people who should be taken into slavery and used as goats until exhaustion but they later realized how divided we are and used our disunity to their advantage to conquer and rule us for about 1000 years. Today, the white man still rules our world while we in Africa (Akwa Ibom included) are still enmeshed in a perennial ethnic struggle that makes no sense as far as our destiny is concerned. We need to purge this evil spirit of ethnicity out of our system as soon as possible if there is to be any hope for us to rise above our tragic history and seize our awesome destiny.
