THE ITALIAN WEDDING RECEPTION We had known the groom for over twenty years and for the longest time we had thought he would remain a confirmed bachelor. Then about twelve years ago, he met Melinda. Only today did he marry the girl. The 12 year courtship was like watching Moonstruck without the Nicholas Gage character. While at the reception, Rita sent me to the bar to get her a drink and this lovely middle-aged lady came-up and started talking to me like she knew me. Okay, weddings are festive occasions and Italian weddings more festive than most, so I didnt think anything of it. Then she took me by the arm and started talking about cousin Mels funeral. I did not interrupt despite the fact I dont have a cousin Mel. Given the sensitive subject, I just let her ramble. Besides I love the fact that Italians are touchy feel-ly people. Out of the corner of my eye, I could see a man pointing at her and laughing with the others at his table. Then she moved her face in as if to give me kiss when she focused and screamed Youre not Frank. Franks whole table burst out laughing. Rita was also amused and had been watching my lack of progress in getting her drink from our table. When I got back to our table, Rita good-naturedly commented I can dress you up but I just cant take you anywhere.
