THE JOY OF HYMNS If you are a child of God alive today or who has lived in the past three hundred years you have surely found a blessing in the hymns we have to sing - sing and declare joy in Christ our Savior, God our Father and the Holy Spirit our helper / instructor! Did you know that hymns didnt even exist until just after 1700 - the only music was to sing the psalms - the Scottish had labored to put the psalms to music and no doubt that was a great blessing. But Isaac Watts, at great criticism to himself, took the psalms and looked at them from a New Testament / Jesus perspective and came up with what we now call hymns. Before Isaacs efforts there was no such thing. One of the very first was a hymn based on Psalm 98 - which declares in part: 4Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! So, in 1719, Isaac Watts declared: Joy To The World ! Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven and nature sing, And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing. Joy to the world, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy. No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as, the curse is found. He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders, of His love. (Issac Watts 1719, George Frederick Handel) WHAT GREATER JOY COULD THERE BE TO THE WORLD THAN TODAYS JOY TO THE WORLD - OUR SAVIOR LIVES - HE HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE AND IS ALIVE, ALIVE, ALIVE FOREVERMORE!
