THE LEAST I COULD DO IS POST THIS! MUHARRAM 1434 A.H. (November 16, 2013) URGENT REQUEST Assalaamu Alaikum (Greetings of Peace): I have a special request to make of our friends and supporters. Two committed friends of mine have been unjustly convicted in a federal court in Texas, and are now scheduled to be sentenced next week. It is my understanding that they were given an opportunity to plead guilty before the start of their trial and, as punishment, simply leave America and the life that they had built through struggle and sacrifice. As law abiding citizens who had not committed a crime, they turned down the deal and decided to have a jury of their peers look at the facts and decide their fate. Like so many other Muslims in the U.S. judicial system (Post 9/11), they lost; and now they face years of imprisonment, and, no doubt, deportation after their sentences are up. I had the pleasure of meeting this couple about two years ago. Hossein Lahiji is a physician, and Najmeh Vahid is a lawyer; she is also the principle founder of a young organization known as the Muslim Civil Liberties Union (MCLU) based in Houston, Texas. These are good people, conscientious Muslims and givers/contributors to the community (both the Muslim community and the community-at-large)! Mr. & Mrs. Lahiji are scheduled to be sentenced next week.
