THE LOVELY PSYCHE The king of a certain country in ancient Greece - TopicsExpress

THE LOVELY PSYCHE The king of a certain country in ancient Greece had three daughters. Each one was beautiful, but the youngest, Psyche, was said to be lovelier even than Venus, the goddess of beauty herself. Wherever Psyche went, people would turn round to look at her, for no one believed that such loveliness could be human. Venus was angry with Psyche for being so beautiful and wished to harm her in some way. She therefore called her son Cupid, the god of love, and said to him, “go and search for Psyche. When you have found her, take one of your magic arrows and shoot her, so that she may fall in love with the ugliest creature on earth.” Cupid flew away and found Psyche in her father’s castle. He watched her playing with her friends, and so lovely did she look that Cupid decided he could never hurt her. Psyche grew up. Her sisters were married and the time came for Psyche herself to take a husband. The king, her father, went to the gods to ask whom his daughter should marry. The king returned with an unhappy face. “My people,” he said, “I have terrible news for you. The oracle says that Psyche must be left on a mountain-side, where she will be married to a horrible monster.” Everyone was very sad and unhappy to hear this. The oracle could not be disobeyed.
