THE MOST QUOTED PASSAGE IN THE BIBLE AGAINST HEALING!!! -2- So what does Paul mean when he says that he thanks God for his infirmities? Is he talking about sickness? 1. we already saw that the Greek word is NOT sickness and that the root meaning is feebleness, weakness. See last post. Sickness is only an IMPLIED meaning, not root meaning. 2. Lets look at the specific verse: 2 Corinthians 12:10 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 1. We are expected to believe that the word weaknesses means sickness. Really? Look at all the other words that follow this word ... do they suggest sickness or something else? It is clear that he is ONLY talking about insults, hardships, persecutions. So from the outset we can see that the immediate context has defined exactly what the Greek word means: it means feebleness and weakness which is exactly what the root word means. There is no mention at all of sickness in this verse NOW LETS LOOK AT THE LARGER CONTEXT and see if sicknesses or persecution and hardships are being described ... Paul is defending his apostelship against the claims of false apostles in 2 Cor 11:13. He then makes a list of what are true characterists of true apostles I also dare to BOAST. Are they [the false apostles] Hebrews? So am I? ...I have worked much harder, BEEN IN PRISON [here we go!!!] more frequently, been flogged more severely, been exposed to death ... I received 39 lashes five times ... [hello are you seeing the greater context here is about persecution NOT SICKNESS] ...beaten with rods, stoned three times, shipwrecked... I have know hunger and thirst ... WHO IS WEAK AND I DO NOT FEEL WEAK? ... If I must BOAST, i WILL BOAST OF THE THINGS THAT SHOW MY WEAKNESS .. even the governor had to arrest me. But I was lowered in a basket from a window. I must go on BOASTING [are we seeing that the boasting and the weaknesses he is talking about is his hardships and pain under persecution?] about my weaknesses ... I received a thorn in my flesh ... three times I pleaded with God to take it away from me but he said to me my grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in weakness. That is why for Christs sake I delight in weaknesses in insults in hardships in persecutions in difficulties for when I am weak I am strong! 2 Corinthians 11:13-12:10 1. Folks I wrote it out in full context 2. So where are the sicknesses that God put on Paul here? 3. The weakness he is referring to is the pain of persecution he is enduring for the name of Jesus. 4. There is no mention anywhere at all about sickness 5. Persecution we are to endure: sickness we are commanded to heal.
