THE MOTHER OF ALL LESSONS FROM THIS ELECTION THE UNCERTAINTY OF ELECTORAL POLITICS/DEMOCRACY By Kellys Kaunda Decisions are made in the heart and only known when counting is done. Embrace this fact and stop equating the number of eggs to the number of chicks. Put differently, stop equating the number of people that turn out at your rallies to the number of votes you might have. Stop equating the number of places you have touched around the country to mean the number of hearts you have penetrated. Stop to equate the number of interviews you have given, the number of television appearances you have made, the favorable manner in which you have been covered to mean how popular you are and how much Zambia wants you. Stop equating the number of people wearing your party regalia to mean the number of votes you may have – the same people wore your opponents regalia yesterday and will wear another one’s tomorrow. Stop flattering your ears when you hear praises of vanity churned out by the campaign songs you have commissioned to mean the music that silently plays within the inner chambers of the hearts of the voters – they may be singing someone else’s song. Stop flattering your self by flying allover the country, blowing noisily over their villages, huts and fields – some voters detest the thoughtless and vain display of pomp and splendor. This lesson is for everyone that participates in elections – they are like gambling – you can’t be so sure about the outcome. When the gambler loses, he walks away with his “dignity” and in silence hoping to win next time. To lose an election noisily is as unreasonable as a losing gambler who shouts and kicks into a machine that has swallowed all his cash! You may risk being banned from the casino – for life! You may risk being banned from the hearts of the Zambian voter – for life!.
