THE MOUTAIN TUNNEL OF TOL the villagers began to walk to chief samoniongs house, laughing and telling stories as they walked. They had to walk around a high mountain in the area of tol known as ONEI, where an enormous giant, ONENIAP, with arms longer than the chiefs house, had just moved into a cave high up on the side of the mountain. Oneniap awakened to the faint sound of joyous human voices. Peering over the rock ledge, he saw the villagers on a path far below. Drool streamed from the hairy corners of his mouth at the sight of the great beskets of food slung on poles over their shoulders. He sprang from the high mountain slope to the flat sand and yanked a tree up by the roots. Give me the food or die! he roared, raising his club over his head. The people of pataa trembled as they laid down their lovingly prepared baskets of food. Oneniap mashed the food togther in his strong arms and then climbed back up to his secret lair near the top of the mountain. Children began to cry, hungry and terrified. Their parents were scared and angry, but there was no remedy except to return home. A handful of the bravest man went ahead to tell cheif Samoniong what had happened. The chief was worried that the giant would soon turn to eating people. He had been hearing reports for some time of mysterious disappearances of food and had watched his people began to mistrust one another. At least now there was an explanation. That night he was lying oh his mat wondering how to kill the giant when a soft voice whispered through the open doorway, samoniong!
