THE MYTH OF BEDDGELERT ... During the late 18th century, Beddgelert was a run-down drovers town in North Wales. An English businessman, at the time, bought the Royal Goat Hotel in Beddgelert... he had hit on an idea to boost British tourism. People werent travelling abroad due to fears over the French Revolution. In England, business minded people such as William Wordsworth, John Ruskin and other artists, were promoting visiting instead the wilds of Britain ... Awareness of Nature Holidays. Together with a colleague, this new owner of the Royal Goat Hotel, took a huge boulder and placed it in an adjacent field. He then invented a story whereby Llewelyn the Great buried his beloved dog Gelert beneath the boulder. The fabrication paid off , tourism boomed, so did his profits, and its still profitable today! Llewelyn is definitely real; whether he had a dog or not is questionable. The fabled dog doesnt lie beneath that boulder!
