THE Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt Caleb Olubolade (rtd) and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) and former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, Friday gave reasons why the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, has not been removed. There has been public outcry from the Rivers State government and some stakeholders, including state governors and members of the National Assembly, demanding the removal of the Police commissioner over his alleged involvement in the political crisis in the state, which snowballed into a fracas last week on the floor of state House of Assembly. Addressing journalists in Lagos, the minister said investigations into the “unfortunate incident” was still ongoing and urged the public to await the outcome. “The chairman Police Service Commission is in a better position to comment on it. Everything falls within his purview,” he stated. Olubolade added that the Police have an internal way of dealing with any erring officers and pleaded with the public to allow the Police high command to deal with the matter accordingly. “The Force has a way of dealing with an issue internally. The public should allow the Force to investigate. “However, I have asked the chairman of Police Service Commission to look into the matter,” he added. On his part, Okiro revealed that Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi had written officially to him about the matter. He further explained that in the letter, the governor raised various allegations against the Police commissioner, including gross abuse of power. “However, the principle of fundamental human rights demands that an accused person should be given a fair hearing. “I have directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar, to investigate the matter and once he is found wanting, he will be dealt with accordingly,” he explained. He regretted the recent fracas in the state assembly members, describing it as “unfortunate.”
