THE NATURE OF THE DEATH OF CHRIST Rom. 3:24-26 We noted in our last session THE NECESSITY OF THE DEATH OF CHRIST. 1. The HOLINESS of God made it necessary. - Man is a sinner and no sin will enter into the presence of the Holy God. 2. The LOVE of God made Christ’s death necessary. - There was no other way for the Holy God to save lost sinners. - “Without the shedding of blood is no remission”(Heb. 9:22). Today, we want to look some truths concerning the NATURE of Christ’s death. I. CHRIST’S DEATH WAS PREDESTINATED A. The death of Christ was no mere accident (Acts 2:23-24). 1. Christ did not suffer by change, but by the providence of God. 2. Here we see the depth of man’s wickedness, and the height of God’s goodness. 3. In the cross, man proved his utter hatred and iniquity, and God revealed His perfect holy love. B. The Lord’s death was more than the death of another martyr (I Pet. 1:18-20). 1. God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself. 2. The wicked men that nailed Christ to the cross could do no more than what God had before determined to be done. 3. God not only knew that wicked men would put Christ on the cross, but determined that it should be done according to His divine will, and for the salvation of His people. II. CHRIST’S DEATH WAS VOLUNTARY A. He died in the place of His sheep (Jn. 10:14-18) B. He volunteered to be the substitutionary sacrifice (Heb. 10:5-7). III. CHRIST’S DEATH WAS A SACRIFICE FOR SIN - His death was the fulfilment of every bloody offering of the Old Testament (Heb. 10:9-14). A. Christ was MADE SIN so that we might be MADE RIGHTEOUS (Isa. 53:10-11). - “Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us”(I Cor. 5:7). B. We have been washed in the blood of the LAMB of God (Heb. 9:14). IV. CHRIST’S DEATH WAS PROPITIATORY - Christ has covered the believer with His righteousness. A. Christ is the propitiation for our sins (Rom. 3:24-25). 1. Christ took the wrath of God on Himself that was due us (I Jn. 2:1-2; 4:10). 2. Christ reconciled us unto God by His own death on the cross (Heb. 2:17). B. The death of Christ satisfied the righteous demands of God (I Pet. 2:24). C. The cross is the meeting place for a holy God and believing, sinful man (I Pet. 3:18). V. CHRIST’S DEATH WAS SUBSTITUTIONARY A. The Holy, undefiled, loving, Christ died as a Substitute for others (Isa. 53:5-6). B. Christ took our place and bore that which was ours that we might receive that which is His (II Cor. 5:21). C. Though Christ was rich, He became poor, that we who are poor, might be made rich (II Cor. 8:9). VI. CHRIST’S DEATH WAS REDEMPTIVE - To “redeem” means “to deliver by paying a price.” A. The ransom price was the blood of Christ, which freed us from the slave market of sin (Mt. 20:28). B. The death of Christ sets the believer free from the condemnation and power of sin (Gal. 3:13; 4:4-5) CONCLUSION - Christ died for believers (Jn. 3:18; 5:24). - Christ will give eternal life to every believer, because He died in his place. - Have you called upon the Lord to save you?
