THE NOVEMBER 2013 GENERAL MEETING OF THE CHICAGO ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY November 8, 2013 at 7:00 P.M. at the ADLER PLANETARIUM COMETS, ASTEROIDS AND METEORS Dr. Joseph Mayer, Director of the Becker Observatory Eastern and Western civilizations from the ancient to the renaissance feared the appearance of these strangely-shaped, celestial objects in the dark, unpolluted sky. Their ignorance of the nature of comets exacerbated by attributions of evil to them by their spiritual leaders led to panic in some cases. Now that we have a firm grasp of celestial mechanics to plot the orbits of comets and their cousins, the asteroids; and have actually visited some of them, do we have anything to fear?? You bet your bippy we do. Ask the people of Chelyabinsk in southern Russia. Ask the astronomers who plotted the summer fly-by of the house-sized asteroid only 17,000 miles above Earth’s surface. Are there more?? How many?? When?? Where?? All will be revealed. Joe Mayer is a long-time Board member, Observatory Director and Astrofest Coordinator. Please join us for what promises to be a very interesting presentation at the Adler Planetarium on November 8th at 7:00pm. Enter at the south entrance. To enter the Museum Campus, you must exit Lake Shore Drive at 18th street and follow the winding road around Soldier Field to the Planetarium. Street parking is available. Parking rates are $2.00 per hour, payable at the parking kiosks. The parking lot may also be open, but usually costs $16. Or use the CTA. Red, Green and Orange Rapid Transit Trains cross Roosevelt Road (12th Street.) Now only the #146 Bus goes to the Adler Planetarium. Instead of turning on Balbo, southbound #146 service will remain on State until Roosevelt and will then make a stop at the Red, Green and Orange line station before continuing on to the Museum Campus.
