THE National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities - TopicsExpress

THE National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Nasir Isa Fagge, has said that the union is not under pressure to suspend the over one month old strike. However, the parley scheduled to hold yesterday between the Federal Government Needs Assessment to Nigerian Universities Implementation Committee and ASUU was stalled as a result of the inability of a sub-committee on infrastructure to submit its report. The report, according to ASUU President would guide the meeting on its deliberations. He added that the meeting could not hold because there was no basis for deliberation. Fagge further stated that ASUU was not stampeded to call off the strike, saying the strike will continue as long as “government refuses to do the right thing.” The Benue State governor, Gabriel Suswam, who is the chairman of the implementation committee, told newsmen that the Federal Government had made useful progress. He expressed optimism that the meeting next week would be productive. Suswam said his committee would ensure that a holistic approach to funding universities is adopted to forestall future crisis over funding. ASUU President had told newsmen that the meeting last week was an inaugural one and that sub-committees had been set up to come up with report yesterday. According to him, the committees comprising the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the National Planning Commission (NPC) are to work out acceptable funding pattern of universities. Nigerian Tribune also gathered that the meeting on Monday last week on the resolution of the issue of earned allowance was tied to the outcome of yesterday’s meeting. By this development, Nigerian students, who have been hoping to resume schooling, would have to wait a little longer. Last modified on Wednesday, 07 August 2013
