THE ONE WITH THE PHAL WALI BAJI I was buying some fruits from a roadside vendor last week when I heard a few street kids cheering, “Phal wali baji ki gaari! Phal wali baji aa gayin!” (Its the fruit ladys car! Fruit lady is here). They came running towards a car that had just parked next to the vendor. A woman, late 20s probably, stepped out and shook hands with the three kids. She came to the phal wala and said, Bhai ussi tarah pehle teen shopper mein saaray aik aik phal daal ke hisab kar dein (Like always, please first set aside 3 bags with one of each fruit in them). She handed these to each of the 3 kids and then went ahead to buy fruits for herself. It clearly looked like it was something she had been doing for quite sometime now, and it was adorable.
