THE ORB: The Orb is a very popular installation piece for technology related events and can be customized with branding, messaging or whatever a client desires Demonstration of the latest ORB’s video capabilities. The ORB is an 18″ diameter, full color spherical LED display surface with 216 lines of resolution, combined with a 6″ grayscale inner display surface with 42 lines of resolution. The Orb is a persistence-of-vision spherical display created by hand by Nick and Ron Sears via the Art Magnitude project. Nick’s tremendous depth of knowledge about computing hardware and Ron’s ability to devise mechanical solutions make pieces like this possible. Two have been made so far, the second of which displays visualization content by Jonathan Cousins created with device-specific software. Both Orbs have been presented at various conferences and festivals such as SIGGRAPH Asia, Maker Faire, Coachella, and TED in 2007.
