THE ORIGIN OF MOORS or MORO By: Drieza A. Lininding It is said that the Moors were the medieval Muslim inhabitants of Morocco, western Algeria, Western Sahara, Mauritania, the Iberian Peninsula, Sicily, and Malta. Their descendants are presently known as the Maghrebis(Note that the rest of the African Black Continent were not called Moors). There is still a debate on where did the term Moors came from, Obviously, Morroco, Mauritania and other Northern African state still retain that identity (not the european version). It is also said that Morroco was actually derived from its former Capital Marrakesh which literally means in Arabic-berber term (Amazigh) words mur (n) akush as Land of God. But who invented or originated the term? if we are to relate arabic, Aramaic and Syriac, Mor or Mar is an Honorific title, In syriac-Arabic Mar is attached to the names of great people- to christians Mar means saint. So to me the Most probable origin of the term Mor, Moors, or Moro is Aramaic which means My Lord it jive with the claim of Moors in Morroco or Marrakesh which means Land of God. But it is still a Mystery, how the term became pejorative especially during the Tudors reign in Europe, It is Understood that after the Fall of Al-andalus in Granada in 1449: the last Muslim caliphate, they tried to erase the identity of the Moors and its origin.But, thank ALLAH(SWT), there are still evidence of early depictions of Moors themselves that survived, below is picture link from the Poems of Cantigas de Santa Maria in 12th century, which clearly wrote the Mouros of Al-Andalus, contrary to many assertions that Moor or Moro was derived from greek word which means black, we can clearly distinguish in this Photo Some Negroes or Black mixed with Caucasian Arabs--Lots of proof now appears that Moors were not Black- in fact, Black only constitute 10 percent of their entire number. Moors or Moro were Mixed descent of Caucasian Arabs and African People black. I Hope this clears the doubt of Many. let us continue this discussion and not allow emotions and hatred rule us. In summary, the Moors came from Morroco which name is derived from its former capital Marrakesh which litereally mean LAND OF GOD. So I am now inclined to declare that BANGSAMORO has just acquired a new meaning, Bangsamoro now means PEOPLE FROM THE LAND OF ALLAH (S.W.T.).
