THE OTHER WISE MAN GregoryKTyree In 1895 a man named Van Dyke Wrote a story that most of us missed It was about the other Wise Man And his story went something like this A priest of the Magi named Artaban In addition to the Wise Men Three Saw a star in the east that intrigued him And he pondered just what it might be So the Fourth Wise man gathered his treasures A sapphire, a ruby, and pearl To go to the ends of the earth To worship the King of the World Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar Were to meet with Artaban to travel To find the King to be worshipped But the fourth Wise Man’s plans unraveled On his way to meet with his colleagues He encountered a dying man And by stopping to help this poor soul He missed the caravan He knew that he couldn’t travel Alone by himself and a horse So in order to buy camels and supplies To sell the sapphire, he was forced He finally made it to Bethlehem But was too late when he arrived For the Holy Family had already left To Egypt they went to survive While in Bethlehem he did encounter A child whose life was in danger So he sold the ruby to save him The gift that was meant for the Stranger Then in haste he traveled to Egypt But the Family had already gone So from country to country and town to town He traveled his whole life long A pilgrim for thirty-three years And a seeker of Holy Light Finally discovered the King of the World When He was to lose His life But on his way to the crucifixion Was a girl being sold into slavery So he sold the pearl of great price And demonstrated selfless bravery Distraught, he went to the Temple Where from the ceiling there fell a stone And mortally wounded the Wise Man Who suffered and died alone But before he drew his last breath He heard a soft voice proclaim “You have done these things unto Me Since you did them in Jesus’ Name” While the first three Wise Men brought Jesus Gifts of frankincense, myrrh, and gold T’was the sacrifice of the Fourth One That tells the Greatest Story e’er told You and I are the Fourth Wise Man If we would but stop on our way To help the helpless and needy And do it in Jesus’ Name
