THE PIT OF BACKSLIDING Backsliding starts with little things, moves on to bigger things, progresses to giving up to and giving over oneself to sin, then soon you dont even know yourself anymore. Anyone who says, I would NEVER do that is not being honest with themselves. Under the right circumstances, all flesh is capable of ANY depravity! Without God, NO ONE is that good. The backslider never stops at what they use to be BEFORE they first found God. EVER! The last state of their soul is ALWAYS worse than the first! For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them. But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire. (2 Peter 2:20-22 KJV) When the sow (pig) that was washed returns to wallowing in the mire, the mud is not a haven or a heaven, after all, its still just mud! (2 Pet 2:20-22) All backsliding starts by lying about your activities. Anything that I am doing that I have to lie about to cover up is clearly sin! Those that I am lying to about my sin are the ones who will be the most hurt by my backsliding: God, my church, my loved ones, and myself! After the initial thrill of sinning is over (and it WILL END), no one continues in sin because they enjoy it. They continue because of their shame and hopelessness! They dont see any way out OR back. So they just keep digging the hole of despair deeper! Most backsliders dont stay backslidden because they want to. They continue in sin because they are too ashamed to find their way back. The adversary tells them that the people of the church will never forgive them and accept them back. So they get angry and lash out against the church and its people BEFORE they have even been rejected. Have some churches (people) rejected backsliders? Yes! But those arent really churches and those arent real people. We should always love and accept those who are trying to return to the fold because (if for no other reason) but for the grace of God, there goes I.
