THE PLAN TO DEMOLISH GLASGOW 50 years ago, Glasgow began a transformation that would totally change the face of Scotland’s biggest city; the creation of the M8. The routing of this new motorway right through the heart of the city centre was a bold move that would see many familiar landmarks swept away. The genesis of the 1965 Highway Plan for Glasgow actually dates back to the 1940’s when the city fathers had a very unsympathetic view of Glasgow’s Victorian and Edwardian heritage and believed these old buildings should be swept away in favour of progress. Finally in the 1960’s the funds were available to do what had not been possible during post war austerity, and a radical plan was begun to make Glasgow into a city fit for the new “age of the motor car.” But in seeking to propel Glasgow into the modern era this plan would demolish communities, cut parts of the city quite literally in half, and radically alter the appearance and personality of Glasgow. “The Plan To Demolish Glasgow” is no dry and dusty story about architecture and engineering – it’s the story of the struggle between the old and new; the past and the future, and a city’s journey to embrace modernity while also rediscovering the need to preserve and cherish the history that is so important to Glasgow’s character. Featuring exclusive interviews with the engineers who designed and built the M8, and the protestors who sought to bring an end to this road building bonanza, as well as including never seen before archive, this documentary will shed new light on this fascinating episode in Glasgow’s recent history. _______ FOLLOW LIPSapp Classic Radio _______ FB: r-js/1vz7Pcz / TW: r-js/1kHd2Qt / Listen to LIPSapp Classic Radio r-js/1dOIQ18 #classicrock #rollingstones #ledzeppelin #santana #eagles #zztop #thewho #beatles #elvis #jimihendrix #dylan #acdc #michaeljackson #pinkfloyd #madonna #u2
