THE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH “Unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen” Eph. 3:21 As a pastor, I have been asked a simple question in varying forms over the years. The summary of this question is, “What does the Church do?” From the beginning when Christ founded it, His Church was given great responsibilities in the service of our Lord. The Great Commission of Christ to the Church is our first responsibility, (Matthew 28:19, 20), yet our duties are many. Preaching and sending the gospel to every person on earth. Leading folks of all ages to Christ, baptizing them and teaching them to follow the Saviour. These things are never ending jobs for His Church while we are upon earth. We observe the Lord’s Supper, read and study His Word, spend time in Prayer every service, and sing songs that lift up the Name of Christ. Included in all of that, His Church is to be a people who hold fast “to the faith that was once delivered unto the saints.” In addition to these things, His Church is to care for their neighbor, pray for the sick, have compassion upon the needy and help the poor. And there is even more! (I fear some people may just tire out reading about it.) The answer posed in the question is the very thing the Holy Scripture teaches: Our Church has many duties and ministries. Yet our One and Only Purpose, in whatever task God has given us, in our worship and in our lives is this: It is to bring Him glory, now and forever. –Pastor Ralston
