THE SAFEST ARTIFICIAL SWEETENER - STEVIA - Part 2 Stevia was actually used most extensively by the Japanese and they have been doing it for over 4 decades. They have conducted over 40,000 studies on stevia and none of them have shown any side effects with stevia. In 1991, FDA banned stevia, which as per many researchers was the reason for protecting the artificial sweetener lobby of companies selling and using crap like aspartame, cyclamate and saccharin. However, they couldnt prove anything against stevia in studies. So, in 2008, finally Stevia was given the recognition of GRAS or Generally Recognized as Safe and allowed it to be used in mainstream food production. Today the same companies who were once against stevia have started using it to maximize profits. Stevia is actually available in 3 forms. One is the actual form where the leaves are dried and crushed into a green powder. The problem with this form is that it has a bitter aftertaste. It is 50 times sweeter than sugar. Then comes the white crystalline powder which is a bit refined, is 200 times sweetet than sugar and has no after taste. The one u should stay away from is the highly refined version of companies like Coca Cola by the brand name Truvia and Pepsi version by name PureVia. These sweeteners use a huge number of chemicals in their manufacturing and come out after a 42 step process. So choose wisely... See the pictures. They are taken from research of Dr. Josh Axe. Also check the pic with the benefits of stevia.
