THE SOUTH AFRICAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION POSITION: Radio Senior reporter DIVISION: NEWS/CA JOB TITLE: Senior Reporter REPORT LINE: Assignment Editor SCALE CODE 300 POSITION NUMBER 60005855 MAIN PURPOSE OF THE POSITION To identify, initiate, investigate, research, plan and record relevant material from stories that are complex in nature. To also produce news reports that are fair, accurate and compelling to target audiences. To perform Assignment Editor’s duties as and when required. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES • To initiate and cover stories as assigned or commissioned • To provide quality, script and clear voice overs, including on air broadcast • To investigate and break stories and follow them through to final product before broadcast • To bring to the job a wide network of contacts and maintain confidentiality of sources • To maintain special focus area (crime) • To give informative and well-researched input to live Current Affairs shows and debates; package stories for current affairs programmes and do live crossings to news bulletins • To check scripts of reporters • To check facts, accuracy and quality of stories • To maintain constant contact and communication with the Assignment Editors • To adhere to SABC editorial code and standard operating procedures • To obtain broadcast quality sound using relevant recording equipment • To set up interviews and lead discussion for broadcast, including cross overs • To meet story deadlines • To stay abreast of news events/developments QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE • Degree/Diploma in Journalism • 3-5 years experience radio reporting UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS • Sound understanding of current trends in the social, economic and political environment • Good sense of news • Clear broadcast voice • Ability to work under pressure and for long irregular hours • Must have a valid drivers license SKILLS AND BEHAVIOURS • Technical Skills & Competence Demonstrates detailed knowledge and expertise in relation to the job; readily absorbs new technical information and keeps up to date in specialist areas. • Problem Analysis Breaks problems into constituent parts and differentiates key elements from the irrelevant or trivial, makes accurate use of logic, and draws sound inferences from information available • Judgement Makes rational, realistic and sound decisions based on consideration of all the facts and alternatives available CLIENT / CONTEXT Context • Complexity of the South African environment • Competitive media and business environment Clients • Public/Audience • Professional bodies/institutions • Management Preference will be given, but not limited to, candidates from designated groups in terms of Employment Equity Act and the SABC’s Employment Equity Initiatives.
