THE STAGE NEWSPAPER ..****FOUR STAR REVIEW The Sleeping Beauty ****FOUR STAR Published Monday 8 December 2014 at 11:26 by Lee Wilkinson This year’s musical family pantomime at the compact Oswaldtwistle Civic Theatre lives up to expectations with an enthralling performance of this classic fairy story by a sturdy cast. While the telling of the tale follows the traditional pattern, it is interspersed with all manner of song and silliness to provide a fresh impetus to the proceedings without detracting from the plot. Shorelle Hepkin, as the fetching Fairy, links the scenes together in the style of a narrator. Nikki Horsburgh as Princess Aurora - the eponymous sleeping beauty - and Samuel Pope as Prince Valentine provide moments of wonderful interaction, both vocally and sentimentally, while Jenny Layton is a spellbinding Carabosse - The Maleficent. Buffoonery at its best is ably supplied in ample proportions by the experienced and popular panto dame Keith de’Winter as a nutty nurse and Karl Greenwood as the exuberant Simple Simon, accompanied by Darren John Langford as the comically droll Lord Chamberpot. In particular, their handy little bench and Twelve Days of Christmas routines are a hoot. Lots of singing and dancing is in evidence, with a selection of well-sung topical tunes, while members of the local Zoe Taylor Dance Academy perform their moves in style. Verdict: Good all-round family entertainment and rollicking festival fun
