THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER, OUR NATIONAL ANTHEM!! As the 4th of July weekend comes to a close, it seems appropriate to share this never-seen-before rendition performed by Christopher and Elizabeth Holloway, two of our most supportive runners who have been performing before our races for the last few years. This performance was recorded prior to our Florida Beach Halfathon & 5K at Ft. De Soto Park on March 17, 2013. It is particularly appropriate to share this today, as yesterday, Christopher celebrated his recent birthday, but Rya and I were unable to attend due to prior commitments. Hopefully next time, my friend! For me, as race director, hearing the National Anthem on race morning has extra-special meaning beyond all the patriotic feelings most of us Americans share. Heres why: after all the hard work of securing permits, attracting athletes to register, planning for traffic control, ordering and acquiring supplies, recruiting volunteers, hiring our race crew, and setting up the race course to welcome our athletes, playing our National Anthem means ALL preparations are complete and we are ready to run! It is MY FAVORITE 2 MINUTES of each race weekend. I usually focus my eyes on our American flag or close them to further focus my attention on the National Anthem - I get goose bumps on my arms every time. Then I turn the race over to our scoring crew to get the race underway, and minutes later, our athletes are off and running...
