THE STORM: God did not send the storm against us but He uses storms to teach us His ways. He used a storm to teach the disciples their fears. (Mark 4:35-41) God used a storm to teach us about the life of the apostle Paul who no longer feared storms. (Acts 27:13-26) In Mark 4:35-41, a major storm hits the Lake of Galilee. The disciples find their boat nearly swamp with water while Jesus is asleep. The disciples asked Jesus the same question that many might have asked on the east coast, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” The disciples are fearful of death and become frustrated with Jesus. Fear leads to frustration. God’s lack of response to the storm on the east coast does not mean God does not care. Even if the weather is out of control, God is still in control The storm did not cause the disciples’ fears. The storm revealed their fears. Fear leads to frustration. Fears releases panic. Fear looks for blame. Fear asks the why questions. Fear brings distance from God. Mark 4:40-41, says, “He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” The disciples did not lose their fear after Jesus supernaturally stopped the storm. The disciples were still “terrified.” Their question, “Who is this?” reveals their fear and their lack of intimacy with Jesus. The disciples were saved from the storm because they went to Jesus. They did not even admit their fear but God knew their hearts anyway. After he calms the storm He also calls them out on their fear and lack of faith or belief in who He really is, exposing their hearts.
