THE STORY OF HOW THE WORD “CANARD” was coined dates back to the 18th century when a grand dinner for a King with a delicious kind of duck – called canard – was to have been the main course or piece de resistance. Unfortunately, the canard was not only a rara avis that time of year, but was totally off-season and unavailable. As a folk-story would have it, the clever chef served ordinary duck’s meat, and passed it for the real canard. That’s the etymology of the French word “canard” which means a big, fat lie. In my latest posting, I used the canard to refer to our lying political leaders who pass a lie for the truth. If he (an unnamed legislator) quacks like a duck, then he himself is a “sitting duck.” QUACK!
