THE TARGETING I think that people fail to recognize the connection between the IRS Tea Party targeting scandal and the passage of the Affordable Care Act. On December 23, 2009 CBS News ran a story entitled Compromise or Corruption in which it detailed the special deals which the Senate was making, like the Louisiana Purchase and the Cornhusker Kickback, to name a few. With those special deals the U.S. Senate passed the Affordable Care Act on December 24, 2009. Obama now had the harder task of passing the bill in the House of Representatives. On or about February 25, 2010 both the Cincinnati office and the Los Angeles office of the IRS began searching, virtually simultaneously, for applications from Tea Party organizations to use as test cases. By March 16, 2010 the IRS had identified 10 Tea Party applicants for Exempt Organization status who they intended to use as test cases. On March 23 the Tea Party held a rally on the steps of the Capitol seeking to “Kill the Bill.” Despite their opposition, the bill was finally passed the next day on March 24. It was signed into law two days later. It was a mere seven days after that, on April 2, that the IRS developed a protocol to specifically “Be On the Lookout” for organizations with the words “Tea Party,” “Take Back the Country,” or “We the People” in their names. If I were investigating this matter here is what I would be looking for: A meeting or telephone call between Rahm Emanuel, Chief of Staff to Pres. Obama, and Lois Lerner, director of the Exempt Organizations Section of the IRS occurring sometime in mid-February of 2010. Next, I would be looking for a February 2010 telephone call or e-mail between Lois Lerner and her offices in Cincinnati and El Monte, California telling those offices to be on the lookout for Tea Party organizations to receive “special treatment.” THE COVER UP If I were involved in the investigation of the cover-up, I would be looking for high-level meetings between the IRS and the White House. For example, on April 23, 2012 an Obama appointee to the IRS met with Pres. Obama at the White House. The next day, on April 24, that same Obama appointee had an eight and a half hour meeting in the executive office building with a high level member of president Obamas staff as well as the Commissioner of the IRS. On April 25, that same Obama appointee issued new guidelines to the IRS on how to target Tea Party and other groups who were seeking status as exempt organizations. By the way, President Obama denies even hearing about the IRS scandal until over a year later. Do you believe that to be true? The Obama administration has managed to make it through the 2010 midterm elections, in which the Democrats lost 63 seats and control of the House of Representatives, and the 2012 presidential election without the Tea Party targeting scandal having made much news. It seems that the Obama administration’s only interest now is in managing news of the scandal through the November 2014 elections. After that, Obama likely doesn’t care what happens. However, for Americans who believe in free speech, this should continue to be an important issue.
