THE TWENTIETH-CENTURY CHAPEL: Nonconformist Architecture in England Since 1900 Saturday 8th November 2014 A one-day conference arranged by the Chapels Society at Carr’s Lane United Reformed Church Centre, Carr’s Lane, Birmingham B4 7SX Twentieth-century chapel buildings are still largely taken for granted, and often dismissed as being of no historic interest. This conference, therefore, focuses on a subject that has been relatively neglected by historians and architectural writers alike. A wide range of buildings will be considered, from Edwardian missions to recent Mormon meeting houses; and attention will be given to some of the architects and writers who shaped Nonconformist developments in the twentieth century. The event is being held in the important Carr’s Lane church centre (of 1968-71, by Denys Hinton & Partners), and among the speakers will be Charles Brown, who was lead architect for the building and other acclaimed Nonconformist commissions. There will be an opportunity to look at the Carr’s Lane building and – it is hoped – to see another Nonconformist place of worship nearby. 10.00 Registration and coffee 10.30 Andy Foster, Twentieth-century chapel-building in Birmingham and the Black Country 11.20 Christopher Wakeling, Puritan architecture for the twentieth century 12.10 Andrew Saint, Edward D.
