THE UMBRA INSTITUTE SUMMER ARCHAEOLOGY PROGRAM 2014 ARCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL AT CASTIGLIONE DEL LAGO (Italy) WITH EXCURSIONS TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES IN CENTRAL ITALY, MAY 26 – JUNE 28, 2014 The Umbra Institute in Perugia, Italy (umbra.org) is pleased to offer a new summer program in Archaeology based in Castiglione del Lago, a charming medieval town and renowned summer location situated in Umbria, along the southwestern shores of Lake Trasimeno, close to renowned historical cities, such as Orvieto, Perugia and Cortona. Recent survey investigations of a large area off the medieval walls of Castiglione have indicated the presence of a rich archaeological site, possibly a Roman building and Etruscan tombs. The goal of the campaign is to assess the original function of the whole area, in order to understand the origins of the settlement of Castiglione. The program includes two courses. ARCL 340: Archaeology in Central Italy: The Etruscan and Roman Legacy (Course Credit: 3)(optional) The course offers students the necessary theoretical background to introduce them to the actual excavation experience in this region of central Italy. At the end of the course students have learned: the history of Archaeology in Italy, its origins and development, and the most recent treads of research. the ancient history of central Italy, with a special focus on Etruscan and early Roman civilization. the strategies employed in the investigation of this type of archaeological records. ARFW 350: Archeological Field Workshop (mandatory) is the archeology practicum. (Course Credit: 3) Students will have the opportunity to actively participate in this archaeological excavation. They will work alongside a professional archeological staff to uncover artifacts and learn necessary archeological digging skills. Field training will include lectures on methods of stratigraphic excavation, recording, and interpretation. These are non-prerequisite courses, students can choose to take one course or both. Courses include fieldtrips to various archaeological and cultural sites, including an overnight trip to Rome. Dates: 5 weeks, May 24th (arrival in Italy) to June 28 (departure).
